Low temperature physics gives insight into turbulence

Andrew Guthrie, Sergey Kafanov, Theo Noble, Yuri Pashkin, George Pickett and Viktor Tsepelin, in collaboration with scientists from Moscow State University, used tiny mechanical resonators to detect individual quantum vortices in superfluid helium. Their work is published in the current volume of Nature Communications. This research into quantum turbulence is simpler than turbulence in the real world, which is observed in everyday phenomena such as surf, fast flowing rivers, billowing storm clouds, or chimney smoke. Despite the fact it is so commonplace and is found at every level, from the galaxies to the subatomic, it is still not fully understood.

Pinnacle's beloved pies, steaks back after sudden closure

“It’s good to see, (customers) are all happy,” Mr Guthrie said. “We had four very big days … restocking the alcohol and restocking the food.” Andrew Guthrie with his wife Karen Guthrie and two of their five sons, John and Joshua. Picture: Heidi Petith Mr Guthrie, who has a son in the Australian Defence Force and another in the cadets, said the pub would “absolutely” be hosting its traditional 10am Anzac Day service on Sunday. “It means a lot to us,” he said. ‘We have enough food to feed at least 1000 people this weekend.” Andrew Guthrie, left, held a memorial service outside his O Shea Hotel in Walkerston on Anzac Day in 2020. He comes from a family of veterans who have fought in all the wars Australia has been involved in from World War I to the Iraq war. His friend Peter Webb is a Vietnam veteran who was deployed to Vietnam for 12 months as a conscript.

Do not panic: Pinnacle pies and steaks will return

Premium Content Subscriber only Pinnacle Family Hotel will likely close for business over the weekend as the freehold owners take back control. Freehold owner Andrew Guthrie says it comes as a “massive, massive shock” but they must step in to protect what is a Mackay and Queensland icon. “We ran that pub for nearly 17 years,” Mr Guthrie said. “It’s an icon.” Mr Guthrie, who also owns O’Sheas Hotel in Walkerston, said the hotel’s famous pies, big crumbed steaks and more would all soon be back on the menu once the takeover was complete. The pies served up at the Pinnacle Family Hotel are world-famous. Picture: File

Pro Bono Programs Stephen Rispoli’s Statement on Proposed Rule 6.05 I write to encourage you to vote to adopt Proposed Rule 6.05 of the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct. As you know, our current Texas conflicts rule requires that each lawyer ensure that there is not a conflict with a potential client before meeting with the potential client to learn about the situation and give advice and counsel. However, this sound rule does have an unintended consequence. The rule poses a particular hardship for law school clinics and pro bono providers across the state who have walk-in clients. . .
