Road improvements to close several Ann Arbor streets through May

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Drivers in downtown Ann Arbor will have to find alternative routes as scheduled road work around North and South Ashley streets will close several streets over the next few months.
The closures began on Monday and will include streetscape, paving and utility improvements, according to the city.
Although many streets will be closed to through traffic, some local traffic will be maintained for businesses in the area.
Here’s which roads will be worked on:
First and Kingsley streets from Miller Avenue to Ashley Street: March 8 to May 31

The University of Michigan is building more than 20 smart intersections over the next three years.
Professor Henry Liu is from U of M’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department.
He says the intersections will contain a variety of equipment that can communicate with automated vehicles and help alert them to pedestrians and other dangers they might not be able to see.
“The vehicle might not be able to see it, but the infrastructure sensors could see it and be able to detect it and send the information to the automated vehicle, so this type of accident can be avoided,” Liu says.
