The Lord Speaker, Norman Fowler, has said a public inquiry into how the Covid pandemic was handled by the government should be set up âas soon as possibleâ and should not be delayed.
Lord Fowler, who was a cabinet minister under Margaret Thatcher for 11 years and is a former Conservative party chair, said: âI would support those saying we need an inquiry into ⦠whether there was a delay in lockdown because if there was we need to know why.â
He added: âIf it was ⦠in face of medical advice then that is quite a hurdle. Politicians need to be guided by the best medical advice in positions of this kind.â

Boris Johnsonâs refusal to trigger a public inquiry into the UKâs handling of Covid is facing a fresh challenge as some of the countryâs leading experts in government and healthcare demand the launch of an immediate investigation.
The Institute for Government (IfG), whose leadership includes the former Conservative cabinet minister David Lidington and the former Labour science minister Lord Sainsbury, will call on the prime minister to set up a statutory public inquiry in May, with hearings to start in September.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has denied a press report which quoted him as allegedly saying he would rather see bodies pile high in their thousands than impose a third national lockdown on the country. Media reports have claimed that Johnson made the comment in the fall of 2020, when his government imposed a second lockdown to combat a surge in coronavirus cases. (AP Photo/Frank Augstein)
