Alberto Carvalho Hails Student and Honorees at Be Strong International’s Spring Charity Event 2021 Miami, FL, April 28, 2021 (PR.com) Introduced by Alberto Carvalho, Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Redlands Middle School student William Romero embodied the essence of Be Strong International’s Spring Charity Event on Thursday, April 22 at The Rusty Pelican.
The 13-year-old student spoke from the heart about his struggles with his self-esteem and how Be Strong International’s After School Club became a “new family” to him, encouraging him to love and accept himself.
Superintendent Carvalho lauded William with a special introduction during the two-hour, sold-out event that began at 6:00 p.m. at The Rusty Pelican, 3201 Rickenbacker Causeway, Key Biscayne, FL 33149. “I want to bring up a remarkable young man who is proof positive that the journey, the transition from tragedy to triumph, is in fact possible with enough will, skill, and belief,” said
“There is no question that if someone visits Miami-Dade County and they go into a hotel and a restaurant and they get infected, then it goes against the economic development of our county,” County Commissioner Rebeca Sosa added.
The governor has said seniors remain a priority. It is unlikely he will allow local leaders to determine who is next in line for a vaccine. For months, elected leaders have asked the governor for power to enforce COVID-19 restrictions and collect fines for violations.
He has denied the request.
“The governor, I know has a very hard decision moving forward in the next round and we all can do is ask and that is what we are doing here today,” Commissioner Chairman Jose “Pepe” Diaz said.
“So I beg to differ,” said Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins, who brought the item to the Commission. “I think the practical effect is the urging, Miami-Dade County is the largest county in the state of Florida, we have to use our voice collectively in order to get things done.”
The County Commission is formally asking the governor to recognize those who the state had labeled “essential workers.”
“Essential workers were declared by our governor a year ago, those essential workers included our teachers, law enforcement and other frontline workers, when vaccines come out, it only makes sense if those essential workers are deemed essential now,” said Cohen Higgins.
