Golden age is dawning for African films, says Ben Amadasun of Netflix

Golden age is dawning for African films, says Ben Amadasun of Netflix Facebook Nigerian Ben Amadasun is responsible for the rapidly increasing African content on the world’s biggest streaming platform, Netflix. In conversation with Anver Versi, he explains how the system works and why this is the much-longed-for turning point for African filmmaking. “I believe this is the beginning of a golden age for African films,” says Ben Amadasun on a Zoom call, the enthusiasm in his voice easily overcoming the long-distancing imposed on us due to the pandemic. Ben is the Netflix Director of Content for Africa. He tells me his role is to track down “brilliant” local content from various African markets and acquire licences to run them on Netflix, which is today easily the biggest and most varied streaming service.

They did not see Magufuli coming - New African Magazine

They did not see Magufuli coming Facebook Anver Versi pays tribute to the late President of Tanzania. “When they said laziness and sloth in public service cannot be cured, they did not see Magufuli coming; “When they said the cartels of corruption strangling Africa’s governments cannot be defeated, they did not see Magufuli coming; “When they said African states cannot become middle income economies within a single presidential term, they did not see Magufuli coming; “When they said infrastructure projects in Africa cannot be completed on time and on budget, they did not see Magufuli coming; “When they said the only way to pursue our development is to follow the failed prescriptions that have left Africa more impoverished and in debt than they found it, they did not see Magufuli coming.”

Voices of African women during the time of Covid - New African Magazine

Voices of African women during the time of Covid Facebook New African magazine editor Anver Versi introduces this unique set of narratives. New African magazine is delighted and honoured to join hands with Collateral Benefits in launching this campaign, Voices of African Women as we all navigate the grim tides of the Covid-19 pandemic. The collaboration shares the personal views, reflections and experiences of African women during this extraordinary period when what we took for granted as ‘normal life’ has been suspended and we have been forced to fall back on our inner resources. As always, the burden of maintaining stability and a sense of purpose both inside and outside the home during a period of crisis falls disproportionately on women. As has been said, it is the women who nurture and keep the flame of hope burning when the world seems to collapse around us.
