New York school districts can expect an infusion of federal money totaling over $4 billion, but the state’s financial outlook still presents the risk that state aid cuts will offset the federal investment.
The stimulus package passed by Congress on Monday night offers school districts about four times the amount of money districts received under the federal CARES act passed in the spring, allocating money to each district based on a formula that distributes federal aid based on school district needs.

The new federal stimulus package will provide about $4 billion in aid for K-12 public schools in New York, and it will be up to the state to determine how the money will be spent, Sen. Charles Schumer said Monday. It’s up to Albany to figure it out, Schumer said during a Zoom media call. He expected the state to use its general formula for providing education aid.
The package also includes $313 million that Gov. Andrew Cuomo can use at his discretion to support K-12 or higher education costs related to COVID-19.
Cuomo did not indicate Monday how the state might use federal stimulus money. But he has faced criticism for the way the state used $1.1 billion in school aid that was included in the federal CARES Act passed in March.
ALBANY (TNS) â The New York Board of Regents on Monday adopted New Yorkâs first-ever K-12 learning standards for computer science and digital fluency.
The guidelines are the culmination of a two-year process during which the state Education Department sought feedback from teachers and statewide experts on computer science and educational technology, according to Board of Regents Vice Chancellor T. Andrew Brown.
âTechnology is a large part of childrenâs lives, and the ability to understand and use technology safely and effectively to learn, communicate and create is critical for 21st century life, work and civic engagement,â Brown said. âThe COVID-19 emergency has magnified the digital divide that separates so many of our most vulnerable students from their peers . itâs critical that comprehensive technology learning is available to our youngest students and continues throughout their scholastic career.â
