“Distractions are the bane of the 21st century,” cites one of my favorite authors. No wonder. We have our streaming services, 1,000+ cable channels, cell phones, and the 24-hour news cycle, which has no shortage of programming in our pandemic and polarized times.
Attention deficit disorder is taking more time and attention from teaching in our classrooms, because that malady seems to be multiplying at meteoric speed.
Now research on attentiveness shows that even momentary distractions erode efficiency. Trying to multi-task sends productivity plummeting by 76%. Even momentary movements away from the task at hand, like checking a text, or worse, answering a call, make our attention spans seem like a schoolboy’s the day before summer break.
