An iconic fixture on Manchester University s campus will be removed next month for restoration so it can sound again for its 100th anniversary next year.
The Verdin Co. of Cincinnati is tasked with the Manchester Chime project, which includes removal of 10 bronze bells from the Administration Building tower Aug. 9 to 11, the university said in a news release.
Along with refurbishing the bells, which range in weight from 550 to 2,650 pounds, work includes creating four bells and installing a new open bell tower next spring or summer in the middle of the Manchester University Mall, the release said.
Alumni and others raised $8,700 in the early 1920s to buy the original chime, and its players – mostly students – pushed hand levers in a drafty room directly below the bells, even in winter, the release said.
The final curtain came down on the scholastic wrestling season back in March. That hasn t stopped Mount Vernon’s Brock Blankenhorn, however, who has kept right on fighting. After stops in Iowa, West Virginia, Indiana and Virginia, Blankenhorn has topped it off at the AAU National Team Duals in Orlando, Florida, and a visit to Walt Disney World on Saturday and Sunday, June 27-28.
The National Team Duals, often referred to as the Disney Duals, hosts teams from all over the country, including the team from Adams Central High School in Monroe, Indiana, which Brock found his way onto. In fact, the Disney Duals weren’t even on Blankenhorn’s radar until the 106-pounder impressed Adams Central Jets’ coach Tony Currie with his performance in a recent tournament in Indiana.

The Indiana FFA Association and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture, in partnership with Nationwide Insurance and Farm Credit Mid-America, have selected eight Indiana FFA agriculture educators as nominees for a Golden Owl Award. Nationwide established the Golden Owl Award to honor teachers and support them with additional resources to assist their continued educational efforts in preparing the next generation for successful agricultural careers.
“Our agricultural educators have committed so much extra time and resources to their students this year, with re-planning almost every FFA event and reworking lessons plans to become virtual, I am thankful that Nationwide Insurance and Farm Credit Mid-America allowed us the opportunity to give back to them,” said Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch. “I appreciated the opportunity to participate in awarding these eight deserving Hoosier educators.”
