IN THIS week’s trip down West Fife’s Memory Lane we look at Moodie Street, an old thoroughfare that once linked the main part of Dunfermline with the Nethertown (or lower town) area of Dunfermline, as described in 1723: The burgh (Dunfermline) is divided into an upper town and a lower town, having the Palace garden and park in the middle. Our first view of the street is a painting looking up into town by Dunfermline artist Adam Westwood. The street, originally called ‘New Street’ until being renamed Moodie Street by the council in 1809, is best known as the birthplace of the world’s most famous philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie, in 1835. The story of how Carnegie’s legacy funded more than 2,500 libraries worldwide between 1883 and 1929 is well-documented but what is less well known is that Moodie Street was the site of an earlier and more basic library among whose founders were Andrew Carnegie’s father, William, as the following description informs us: The Tradesm
