Her debut feature, âSkater Girl,â which is coming to Netflix June 11, showcases how Prerna, a teenager growing up in rural India, comes of age when sheâs introduced to the sport of skateboarding. As a result, she has to fight the odds to follow her dreams and compete in the national championship.
The film, starring debutante Rachel Saanchita Gupta as Prerna, highlights the challenges of constructing one of Indiaâs largest skateparks to drive social change and showcases the struggles of empowering women in a remote village in Rajasthan.

There is still hope for Filipino stories to be recognized at the Oscars this year. According to a story by Film Development Academy of the Philippines, among the films the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences still considering for the Best Picture award are the movies “Lingua Franca,” “A Thousand Cuts,” and “Yellow Rose.”
The three feature films are among the 366 titles eligible for the award, the highest count for Best Picture in the last five decades.

The film is a landmark moment for Southeast Asian representation in Hollywood: Raya is Disney’s first Southeast Asian princess, and is voiced by Kelly Marie Tran, the first Southeast Asian actor to lead an animated feature from the studio. Set in the fantasy land of Kumandra, which Disney has said is inspired by the cultures of Southeast Asia, the story follows the quest of the eponymous heroine as she searches for the fabled dragon Sisu in order to restore a broken world.
