Since the beginning of this pandemic, public health and medical experts have continuously pleaded with the Doug Ford government to enact measures such as paid sick days and the closure of non-essential businesses to stop the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus. These calls have been ignored and it has become clear that the provincial government is incapable of managing this crisis.
In light of this, some local officials have decided to take matters into their own hands. Last week, Peel Region’s medical officer of health, Dr. Lawrence Loh, decided to close all non-essential businesses that had five or more confirmed cases of COVID-19. Toronto’s medical officer of health made a similar announcement that same day and they were able to do this without provincial approval.

Off-campus house parties triggered a 22-person community COVID-19 outbreak, London-area public health officials say, prompting city hall vows to slap rule-breakers with tickets and fines as St. Patrick’s Day looms.
The outbreak was ignited by at least 10 university student house parties between March 2 and 6, the Middlesex-London Health Unit said Thursday, less than two weeks after the area entered the orange zone in the province’s restrictions framework.
