Jayro Bustamente | La Llorona | film review

Jayro Bustamente’s War Crimes Film, ‘La Llorona’, Reckons with Crushing Guilt Bustament’s Efraín Ríos Montt-inspired La Llorona reimagines the Latin American folk tale of a woman mourning her children along the banks of the river where they drowned. La Llorona 6 August 2020 (US, Shudder)| 30 August 2019 (Venice Film Festival) War criminals tend to act frail when prosecuted for their atrocities. In Jayro Bustamente’s film, La Llorona ( The Weeping Woman), fictional General Enrique Monteverde (Julio Díaz) breaks into an explosive coughing fit when the guilty verdict is announced at his trial for leading a real-life genocidal campaign during Guatemala’s all-too-recent past. By casting himself as the victim, the moment is stripped from the jubilant, colorfully shrouded Maya Ixil women in the courtroom to see justice finally being served.

Money for nothing: NFTs spark a new digital gold rush

Everydays collage Beeple/Christie s A digital artist called Beeple is now one of the top three most valuable artists alive – in any medium – after he sold a JPG file of his work for US$69,346,250. Welcome to the crazy world of NFTs, and the latest wild gold rush to hit the internet. Mike Winkelmann, AKA Beeple, is a legit digital artist, and a very prolific one. Every day, for more than 13 years, he has created a new artwork from scratch – 5,064 of them and counting, according to his website at beeple-crap.com. He doesn t seem to think they re all that great: The purpose of this project, he writes, is to help me get better at different things. By posting the results online, I m less likely to throw down a big pile of ass-sh#t even though most of the time I still do because I suck ass. I would disagree, and so would others, it seems, since a first-of-its-kind auction at Christie s just pulled in nearly US$70 million for

Alan Bowness (1928–2021) – an evangelist for modern art who transformed the Tate

Some achieve distinction in one or possibly two branches of the world of art, but few, if any, are outstanding in all of them. Alan Bowness – art historian, curator and museum director, critic and journalist, and a collector himself – was just such a man, for all his personal modesty and quiet public profile. What drove him was his love for, and thirst for knowledge of, 19th- and 20th-century art – painting and sculpture especially. This allowed him to become one of the most effective proselytisers for contemporary art, which in Alan’s heyday was very much a minority, and some would say elitist interest. (As an educator, he no doubt thought that every individual, with self-willed effort, might join in the pleasures that all the arts bring.)
