The faces on stage, and in the audience, were familiar. But almost everything else was a brand-new Wilmington experience on Sunday, as thousands flocked to downtown s Northside to check out the grand opening of Riverfront Park Amphitheater.
It was all part of a free concert and July 4 celebration put on by the city, which has sunk more than $30 million into the site. A good time was had by almost all, it would seem, and for a grand opening things seemed to go remarkably smoothly, despite the crowds, which built throughout the day and were never larger than when county rockers L Shape Lot were playing their closing set. Even as people could be seen streaming away from the venue, it remained pretty packed inside.
Mayfaire by-the-Lake makes welcome return

For about 25 years, Lakeland acrylic gouache painter Stephen Koury has shown his realism wildlife and landscape artwork at the annual Mayfaire by-the-Lake art festival.
For the past five years, Koury’s daughter, Sage, has taken to the festival stage to entertain the crowds with her singing.
This year, on Mother’s Day weekend, the Kourys once again were off Lake Morton Drive, simultaneously showing and performing their talents. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 Mayfaire by-the-Lake was cancelled.
Held Saturday and Sunday around Lake Morton on Lake Morton Drive just south of downtown Lakeland, since 1971, The Polk Museum of Art at Florida Southern College’s Mayfaire by-the Lake has become one of the United States’ most acclaimed juried outdoor art festivals. The free show is held each year on Mother’s Day weekend and this year, artists are competing for part of $17,000 in total prize money.

Friends, family and fans are mourning John C. Golden Jr., a dashing guitarist, singer and storyteller who entertained Wilmington audiences for decades.
Golden, 79, died Friday, Jan. 29, after what family members described as a long battle with cancer.
A Wilmington resident since 1977, Golden spent a career as a civil engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in 1997 as chief of geotechnical services for the Corps Wilmington office.
His second life, however, was as a folk singer and folklorist, performing widely through Southeastern North Carolina. He s been a real presence in the arts community and the music community here for ages, said Tony Rivenbark, executive director of the Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts.
