Dear KCSB listeners and Daily Nexus readers,Â
Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, UC Santa Barbara and Isla Vista community members have had to adjust almost all aspects of their lives to help mitigate the spread of the virus.Â
As Isla Vista slowly re-opens, KCSB and the Daily Nexus have decided to work together to document the ways in which our community has changed over the past 18 months. Beginning August 2, we will be releasing a new series, âUnmasking Isla Vista: A COVID-19 Community Archive.âÂ
This collaborative, multimedia series is made up of six components which will be released over the span of six weeks beginning August 2: Human Struggle, University & Students, Testing & Vaccines, Local Businesses & Essential Workers, Community Reflection and Community Activism.Â

The University of California released the admissions data for the incoming class of freshmen on July 19, revealing that UC Santa Barbaraâs number of admitted students this year decreased from Fall Quarter 2020.Â
The data shows that Asians remain the largest ethnic group admitted among in-state students into UCSB. Chicanx/Latinx students make up the second-largest group admitted to UCSB, despite there being a dip in admittance numbers from Fall Quarter 2020. White/Caucasian people make up the third-largest group of admitted students, with a 2% decrease from Fall Quarter 2020.Â
Throughout the entire UC system, all UC schools saw an increase in admissions between 2019 and 2020. Between 2020 and 2021, most schools had similar admission numbers compared to 2020, with two notable exceptions being UC Los Angeles and UCSB. Â
