WCSU Master of Fine Arts students present virtual exhibition Written by WCSU Next Six Western Connecticut State University recipients of the Master of Fine Arts degree this May will present their works in the M.F.A. Thesis Exhibition running from Wednesday, June 23, through Saturday, July 10, at the Blue Mountain Gallery in New York. Admission will be free for public viewing in person at the gallery, located in Suite 200, 547 W. 27 th St. in Manhattan. The gallery will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday during the exhibition. The exhibition, supported by the Jason and Ellen Hancock Student Endowment Fund, showcases the diverse works in painting, illustration and mixed media created by this year’s M.F.A. graduates. The WCSU Department of Art organizes the M.F.A. Board of Regents honors WCSU professors Aloni and Cordeira Written by WCSU Next Western Connecticut State University faculty members Dr. Maya Aloni and Dr. Joshua Cordeira have received recognition from the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities Board of Regents as the WCSU recipients of the board’s 2021 teaching and research awards. Aloni, an associate professor of Psychology and director of the Relationship Research Lab, has earned the top BOR Teaching Award honoring the faculty member at the CSCU system’s four state universities who best exemplifies excellence in teaching. Cordeira, an associate professor of Biological and Environmental Sciences and director of the Neuroscience Research Lab, has been selected to receive the campus-based BOR Research Award given annually to the WCSU faculty member who demonstrates superior quality in research.

WCSU to stage virtual Jazz Festival and discussion on race Written by WCSU Next Western Connecticut State University will resume its long-running Jazz Festival virtually with four days of music and educational opportunities. Tia Fuller, who played the saxophone for the no-nonsense character Dorothea Williams in the Pixar movie “Soul,” will perform as the festival’s featured artist at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 7. Isaac Jean-Pierre of Norwalk and Bakhtawar Izzat of Bethelnamed WCSU recipients of 2021 Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award

Written by WCSU Western Connecticut State University senior Bakhtawar Izzat and recent graduate Isaac Jean-Pierre have been named recipients of this year’s Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award for outstanding academic achievement and engagement in service and other activities in the university, regional and global communities. Izzat, of Bethel, is a candidate this May to receive a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Business Administration, maintaining a GPA in a range of 3.92 to 4.0. Jean-Pierre, of Norwalk, earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Management in December, graduating magna cum laude with a GPA of 3.87. Izzat, a Kathwari Honors student at WCSU, has demonstrated a diversity of interests ranging from academic research and peer mentoring to community service, women’s health, social justice and international diplomacy.
