A Celoron man and former treasurer of a local union representing iron workers has pleaded guilty following a theft investigation.
Scott Russell Merritt, 40, entered the plea to theft from a labor union before U.S. District Judge John L. Sinatra Jr.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Merritt allegedly embezzled $50,850.71 in union funds while treasurer of Ironworkers Local 470. The Celoron man is said to have written union checks to pay various personal expenses.
The thefts allegedly took place between May 2011 and August 2018.
The charge, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Former JCMC union official pleads guilty to embezzlement ×
The former secretary-treasurer of Local 2254 of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Union (AFSCME) at Jersey City Medical Center admitted embezzling $40,455 from the union’s checking and savings accounts, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael Honig.
On Jan. 12, Linda Rogers, 71, of Jersey City, pleaded guilty by videoconference before U.S. District Judge Stanley R. Chesler to an indictment charging her with embezzlement from the union at Jersey City Medical Center (JCMC).
According to court documents, Rogers was employed at the Jersey City Medical Center as a medical clerk and also held a part-time position at Local 2254 as its secretary-treasurer.
