NC could see a budget stalemate again this year, this time between Republican chambers

NC could see a budget stalemate again this year, this time between Republican chambers Dawn Baumgartner Vaughan, The News & Observer (Raleigh, N.C.) Jun. 3 RALEIGH The North Carolina state budget being a drawn-out battle between branches or chambers is becoming more of a tradition than an exception. Less than a month before the new fiscal year begins, there s still no new state budget. And the state could see another summer-long budget stalemate, or one that extends into the fall. There s a chance there might not be a budget in the end, at least not in the traditional sense. Instead, Senate leader Phil Berger is ready to move ahead with smaller, mini budget bills by mid-June, he told reporters Thursday on the Senate floor. That means the week of June 14, less than two weeks away.

Metro Nashville school board denies two charter school applications

View Comments The Metro Nashville Board of Education denied two charter school applications Tuesday, kicking off what has become a process of denials and appeals for those hoping to open charter schools in the city. Despite meeting or partially meeting the standards required to open, an application to open a new dual-language K-8 school in South Nashville and an application to establish “Nashville Classical Charter School II” were both denied.  The dual-language school, Aventura Community School, proposed providing instruction in English and Spanish for about 930 students starting with the 2022-23 school year. But the district s Office of Charter Schools found the application did not provide enough evidence that it could support students with disabilities or provide intervention services. Board members, including Gini Pupo-Walker, agreed that number of students who speak Spanish or would be interested in the dual curriculum is continuing to grow in Nashville.

Monday numbers: A closer look at charter schools in North Carolina

The charter school movement began in earnest in North Carolina in 1997 when 34 schools opened across the state. There are now 200 charter schools in operation.  The 1996 Charter School Act established the system of tuition-free, public schools that are not bound by many of the rules as traditional public schools. The act was sponsored by Sen. Wib Gulley, a Democrat from Durham, and Rep. Steve Wood, a Guilford County Republican.  These days there’s less bipartisanship about charter schools, although Democrats are more likely not to support them than are Republicans.  Conservatives tout charters as school choice options that help families flee low-performing schools. Progressives say they siphon money and resources from traditional public schools, and have an advantage because they don’t have to follow the same rules as traditional public schools.
