Georgia’s new senators, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, were sworn in on Wednesday, making Schumer the new Senate majority leader the first-ever Jew in that powerful role.
Never afraid to reference his Yiddishkeit, Schumer recalled his roots in an address in the Senate chamber. And he got biblical, too.
“With the swearing in of these three senators, the Senate will turn to Democratic control … under the first New York-born majority leader in American history,” he said. “A kid from Brooklyn, the son of an exterminator and a housewife, a descendant of victims of the Holocaust.

Never afraid to reference his Yiddishkeit, Schumer recalled his roots in an address in the Senate chamber. And he got biblical, too.
Senator-elect Jon Ossoff’s opponent in his contentious recent Senate race, former Senator David Perdue, ran ads that digitally lengthened Ossoff’s nose and painted him with age-old antisemitic tropes: the socialist, the globalist, the media-controlling journalist.
Perdue saw Ossoff’s Jewishness as a liability. Ossoff’s supporters saw it as something to be celebrated. Something no one pointed out: Ossoff isn’t just Jewish, but a patrilineal Jew.
I grew up in rural Georgia. My peers didn’t care that my mother was Catholic when they asked me to accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and savior or told me Holocaust jokes. Ossoff is hated as any other Jew, and he is celebrated as any other Jew. It does not matter that he is Jewish through his father, not his mother.

Throughout their high-stakes campaign for Georgiaâs twin Senate runoff elections, the two Democrats made an unlikely pair: One, a Black pastor who grew up in public housing, the other a slim-suited millennial and investigative journalist known mostly for having narrowly lost an audacious bid for Newt Gingrichâs old congressional seat.
But when each found himself facing a Jan. 5 runoff that would determine the balance of power in the Senate, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff threw in together and campaigned as running mates.
