Gill Steward will join Cumbria CC as chief executive in August once the move is approved by full council. Ms Steward is the current chair of the Centre for Local Economic Strategies thinktank. She was chief executive for Bexley LBC from 2016 to 2018 and interim chief executive of West Sussex CC between 2014 and 2016.
Gillian Beasley, chief executive of Cambridgeshire CC and Peterborough City Council, is retiring. Ms Beasley has been at the helm of Peterborough for 19 years and, in addition, was six years ago appointed to run Cambridgeshire in a unique county council/unitary arrangement. In 2008 she was awarded an OBE for her work in local government.
The Tories have 23 seats on the council, three seats short of a majority. The spotlight will be on the council’s three independent, non-aligned councillors who may hold the balance of power. The head-to-head debate follows Southend Council being left in limbo following the recent local election. Mr Gilbert said: “I will be standing again, and it is my understanding that I have the support of the coalition. “Both the Lib Dems and Independent group are behind me. It’s only fair to be democratic, and allow others to be involved. “If there’s a tie, the mayor will have the casting vote.”

John Marshall has been offered the job to serve as the 10th president at Colorado Mesa University.
After a national search that produced more than 60 applicants, the current vice president of student services at CMU was chosen Thursday out of a field of three finalists. Marshall would replace President Tim Foster, who is retiring from the job this summer after 17 years on the job.
In a unanimous decision, members of CMU s Board of Trustees said they did so because of Marshall s background, historical knowledge of the university and abilities in a wide range of things, such as his leadership skills, working relationship with students and ability to create partnerships with the community.
