12 KU students receive Undergraduate Research Awards for summer

Wed, 06/09/2021 LAWRENCE This summer, 12 University of Kansas students will receive Undergraduate Research Awards (UGRAs). UGRA recipients are awarded a $1,000 scholarship as they work on mentored research and creative projects. “I am continually impressed by the quality of research and creative projects proposed by undergraduate students at KU,” said Alison Olcott, director of the Center for Undergraduate Research and associate professor of geology.  “These students have worked closely with their mentors to devise projects that stand to make important contributions to their areas of study.” Students apply for UGRAs by writing a four-page research proposal under the guidance of a mentor. Faculty reviewers evaluate the applications based on the merit of the applicant s proposal and a recommendation from the mentor.

Students win awards at online Undergraduate Research Symposium

Mon, 05/10/2021 LAWRENCE The University of Kansas Center for Undergraduate Research has announced the winners of its 24th annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. The event took place online this year and went live April 24. Over 190 students shared their undergraduate research and creative projects that they have been working on throughout the spring semester.    “These students’ research accomplishments were impressive, especially considering the challenges of the past year,” said Alison Olcott, director of the Center for Undergraduate Research and associate professor of geology. “I commend everyone for their hard work and willingness to innovate.” ACE Talks The ACE Talks are the keynote presentations for the online symposium. These talks showcase students presenting their research and creative projects in an (A)ccesible, (C)reative and (E)ngaging way. Undergraduate researcher wins new KU award | The University of Kansas

Fri, 05/07/2021 LAWRENCE Jade Groobman, a senior from Boulder, Colorado, has been awarded the first Courtwright Award for Undergraduate Research Excellence through the University of Kansas Center for Undergraduate Research. Groobman is majoring in women, gender & sexuality studies. Her mentor is Sarah Deer, University Distinguished Professor. Groobman’s undergraduate research project explores the experiences of Jews of color in Jewish spaces. Through semi-structured interviews and engagement with existing research, Groobman aims to better understand how both Jews of color and white Jews understand racism in Jewish spaces and what can be done to create antiracist Jewish communities. Center announces 2021 Undergraduate Research Mentor Award winners

Mon, 04/26/2021 LAWRENCE The University of Kansas Center for Undergraduate Research has announced the winners of two annual awards given to recognize undergraduate research mentors who make a difference in the lives of their students at KU. James Blakemore, associate professor of chemistry, and Jiakun Jack Zhang, assistant professor of political science, are the recipients of the 2021 K. Barbara Schowen Undergraduate Research Mentor Award. This faculty award is named after the professor emeritus of chemistry, whose efforts to promote undergraduate research at KU led to the development of the Undergraduate Research Symposium.  Blakemore has mentored over a dozen undergraduate researchers since he arrived at KU in 2016. In his nomination packet, Blakemore’s students noted his hands-on approach to mentoring students that pushed them to develop their own voice as writers and their own ideas as researchers.
