Al Jazeera has been awarded a top jury prize and six “highly commended” second places in the Drum Online Media Awards.
The awards, which recognise excellence in digital journalism and innovation, were announced during a virtual ceremony webcast from London.
AJ Contrast, Al Jazeera’s immersive storytelling and media innovation studio, led the wins, earning top prize in the Editorial Innovation of the Year category for Still Here, the virtual and augmented reality installation that premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
Created in partnership with the Women’s Prison Association in New York City, the installation-cum-web experience explores the impact of incarceration and gentrification on Black women in the US – one of the groups most affected by disproportionate rates of incarceration.
Brave Care raises $10M to expand its primary and urgent care clinics for kids, grow remote services

New funding: Portland, Ore.-based pediatric health startup Brave Care raised a $10 million Series A round.
How it works: Brave Care is akin to ZOOM+Care clinics but specifically targets kids. The startup offers around-the-clock remote care through an app and via phone lines staffed with pediatric nurses. Its primary and urgent care clinics are open every day, all year from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and include on-site pharmacies. Brave Care has one mobile healthcare unit with plans to add mobile units in Texas and North Carolina.
Tooman had been an avid cyclist and ridden his bike to work each day, Rei said. “He was a kind, lovely man, a true gentleman who always had a smile on his face. “He was an absolute legend in the Manukau District Court and contributed a great deal to society.” In a victim impact statement read to the court, Diane Tooman, Tooman’s sister, said she had no other family she was close to and the pair had lived together. “He was a very private person and yet so dearly loved and respected by so many.” On the morning of Tooman’s death, Diane Tooman said he had been riding his mountain bike to go and volunteer at a local riding for the disabled club.
The fatal crash happened near Allenby park in Papatoetoe back in July.
A 20-year-old man has been charged in relation to a fatal crash, almost five months earlier, which killed a cyclist. The crash happened near Allenby Park in Papatoetoe around 8am on July 23, and left retired probation officer John Tooman in a critical condition. Tooman was originally taken to Auckland City Hospital with critical injuries and underwent surgery, but died a few hours later. Inspector Kay Lane said the man had been charged with reckless driving causing death and would appear in the Manukau District Court on Wednesday.
