ALASKA Press Club awards KDN staff

KETCHIKAN (KDN) — The Alaska Press Club has recognized work published by three Ketchikan Daily News staff members in 2020. Daily News Staff Photographer Dustin Safranek, Staff Writer Sam Stockbridge and Wire Editor Robert Rice were among the 2020 Alaska Press Club Award recipients announced this past Saturday. Dustin Safranek earned awards in the Best Scenic Photo and Best Portirait categories. Safranek’s “Snowy Summit” image of Ketchikan hiker Ken Arriola ascending near the peak of Deer Mountain on March 7, 2020, was awarded second place in the all-media Best Scenic Photo category, to which a judge commented  “Man, Alaska is beautiful!” A seven-image collection of Safranek’s portraits of local families who were hunkering down during the first wave of the novel coronavirus pandemic was published in the April 4-5, 2020, edition of the Daily News, and earned the second-place award in the all-media Best Portrait category.

Annie Ropeik Annie Ropeik reports on state economy and business issues for all Indiana Public Broadcasting stations, from a home base of WBAA. She has lived and worked on either side of the country, but never in the middle of it. At NPR affiliate KUCB in Alaska s Aleutian Islands, she covered fish, oil and shipping and earned an Alaska Press Club Award for business reporting. She then moved 4,100 miles to report on chickens, chemicals and more for Delaware Public Media. She is originally from the D.C. suburb of Silver Spring, Maryland, but her mom is a Hoosier. Annie graduated from Boston University with a degree in classics and philosophy. She performs a mean car concert, boasts a worryingly encyclopedic knowledge of One Direction lyrics and enjoys the rule of threes. She is also a Hufflepuff.
