Landlords in Alachua County will no longer be able to discriminate against people who rely on rental assistance from the government through housing vouchers, officials said.
County leaders have been playing a cat-and-mouse game of legislative changes to keep up with landlords who find ways to avoid accepting the Section 8 vouchers, which are housing subsidies.
This week, they approved amendments to the county s anti-discrimination housing ordinance that take effect Sept. 1.
Despite laws that say landlords may not summarily reject those using the subsidies to pay rent, renters hoping to use them say they are frequently thwarted by apartment complexes who simply refuse to accept them.
A few weeks ago, 73-year-old Jannie Webb was distraught, thinking that she might soon be homeless after she got a notice to vacate her reasonably priced unit in Pine Ridge Apartments, where she had lived for 12 years.
But she said Tuesday that she’s feeling a lot better, as a representative of the complex owner has agreed to fly from Texas next week and discuss rental options with her and others who have received the “non-renewal” letters.
In October, KeyCity, a Texas-based private equity firm, bought 26 buildings more than 80 units in the complex, including the community center.
The buildings, which were built in the mid- to late ’80s, are run down and have problems such as leaky roofs, mold and plumbing issues. The company says it plans to renovate the units.

Upheaval in Pine Ridge
The first group of residents in Pine Ridge, a development of more than 300 low-rent apartments in northwest Gainesville, have received letters telling them to leave their properties by July 31. A developer in Texas bought all the units from the previous landlords, planning to renovate the units and double rents to gentrify the area and increase profits.
