In her four years at Boston University, Archelle Thelemaque (COM’21) has amassed an impressive list of accomplishments, among them three stints as a student government officer, being a Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground student ambassador, and interning at global public relations firm Ketchum PR. And that only begins to scratch the surface.
Now the Posse scholar can add one more accolade: this Sunday, she’ll address more than 3,000 members of the undergrad Class of 2021 as the student speaker at BU’s 148th Commencement.
The PR major and Georgia native will share the stage with the undergraduate ceremony’s main speaker, US Representative Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), who will receive an honorary degree. (Moderna chairman and cofounder Noubar Afeyan, also receiving an honorary degree, will be the speaker at that morning’s graduate student ceremony.)

It’s a chilly evening in early April. Bundled up in sweaters and sweatshirts, 15 Boston University undergrads sit in a circle on blankets on the grassy BU Beach. Swati Rani’s class, Asians Are People of Color, Race Relations and Writing,
is meeting in person for only the second time this semester.
Kevin Nguyen (CAS’24) explains how Rani has turned their class into a community, despite the pandemic and social distancing. “Having a teacher that’s a little loud and energetic puts that energy into us as well,” he says, glancing at Rani as his classmates nod in agreement.
Eliot Usherenko is transitioning
to the next chapter of his life. After four years studying at Boston University and working as a member of the School of Law’s Student Affairs team, he’s beginning his quest to become a lawyer.
But not before accepting this year’s Undergraduate Outstanding Service Award.

“I only wish I could hire him on as a more permanent team member; but the world needs lawyers of his character, ethics, and sense of self,” writes Geraldine Muir, LAW associate dean for student affairs, in her letter recommending Usherenko for the Student Employee of the Year Awards.
