A recount of votes cast during Town Meeting Day in Essex has confirmed that the town rejected a measure that would have merged it with the village of Essex Junction.
The recount, which took place Monday, showed that only 19 votes separated yes votes from no votes (3,737-3,756). In the original count on March 2, that margin had been 17 votes. 
Essex Junction, which separately voted on the merger in November, overwhelmingly approved the measure, with more than 70% of the people who voted in favor. But, both the town and village needed to approve the measure for a merger to occur.
