The district announced the new administrators May 28.  We are pleased to have these strong administrators taking on new roles and responsibilities,” Buncombe County Schools Tony Baldwin said in a press release. “We know there is hard work ahead as we all continue to recover in the wake of the pandemic. These are the right principals to take the helm and help lead the way to student success.” Here s the new leadership at county schools, as described in the release: Carrie Lynch is the new principal at Avery’s Creek Elementary School. Lynch, the 2021 BCS Principal of the Year, is currently the principal at W.D. Williams Elementary School. Her past assignments include assistant principal at W.D. Williams and Asheville City Schools Ira B. Jones Elementary School.

Buncombe County predicts lower state testing scores because of COVID

View Comments Local schools anticipate students will not perform as well as usual in state testing due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s weighty strain on education.  Buncombe County Schools Director of Testing Steve Earwood said because “many students have had their education disrupted,” the district is preparing for lower test scores.  “The results may be lower than they would have been in a normal year, but it will be reflective of the learning that has taken place,” Earwood said. “We may find that the students will do much better than we think they will. We don’t know which is why we need the assessments to accurately gauge the impact COVID has had on the education of our students.”

NWS upgrades tornado to EF-3 with winds up to 150 mph

From The Tribune staff reports CENTER POINT The National Weather Service in Birmingham upgraded the tornado that hit the Fultondale area to an EF-3. Damage was reported primarily north of Walker Chapel Road NW to U.S. Highway 31 and to New Castle Road. Crews said winds were at least 150 mph on the evening of Monday, Jan. 25, 2021. “Keep in mind that intensity & width varied along its path,” the NWS posted on Facebook. “The EF-3 damage was focused near Lykes Blvd. to New Castle Rd.” The tornado had a path length of 9.5 miles and a max width of 500 yards, according to the NWS.
