Arlene Foster faced unprecedented challenges and monumental political changes during her tenure as leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).
From Brexit to the Irish Sea border and of course the pandemic, it has been a tough few years for Northern Ireland s first minister, culminating in the revolt that has forced her to step down.

When Arlene Foster replaced the retiring Peter Robinson in late 2015 her position as the leader of unionism in Northern Ireland looked unassailable.
For Mrs Foster, a passionate supporter of the royal family, it was an uncontested coronation as DUP leader and Stormont First Minister.
The following year the first woman to lead the party founded by Ian Paisley defied the pundits to repeat the DUP’s best ever election result in the 2016 Assembly poll. ....

Arlene Foster: the first woman set to lead the DUP

The Democratic Unionist Party is poised to formally elect Arlene Foster as its first female party leader on Thursday evening.
Having held several high-profile posts in Northern Irish politics, Foster is described as personally charming and has long been tipped for Stormont s top job.
Born Arlene Kelly in Roslea in 1970, she encountered the horrors of the Troubles first hand as a youngster, says the BBC. When she was eight years old, her father, a part-time policeman, was shot by the IRA at the family farm.
They shot him in the head as he was closing in the cattle, she later told the Sunday Tribune. He came crawling into the house, blood streaming down his face. ....
