Kenny and Keith Lucas thought they had a full education in Black history.
When they were growing up in Newark, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were pillars of the school curriculum.
“It never felt like Black history was a month while I was in Newark,” Kenny tells NJ Advance Media. “It felt like Black history was taught throughout the year.”
Still, they never learned about Fred Hampton until they got to college. They first encountered his name in an African American studies class when they were sophomores at The College of New Jersey.
