Thought Arizona Beer Week was canceled this year due to COVID-19? Think again.
It is not only happening this year but the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild has extended it throughout February to encourage social distancing.
âCOVID-19 has brought unprecedented challenges to the Guild with events â like Strong Beer Festival, Baja Beer Festival, Real Wild & Woody â being their main source of revenue. We are asking for all Arizona breweries and brewers far and wide to raise a glass with us and participate in this collaboration,â said Rob Fullmer, guild executive director.
Arizona Beer âMonthâ includes more than 20 craft breweries throughout the state â including 12 in the East Valley â that are selling a special Rebuild the Guild Benefit Beer.
With this pandemic with us for nearly a year now, who couldn t use a cold beer? Unfortunately, fear of spreading COVID-19 has taken its toll on brewery tasting rooms (as well as restaurants where craft beers are sold), so it s been a tough year for local breweries. More people are drinking at home instead of going out and small-batch breweries don t always have the resources to can or bottle beer.
Ahead of Arizona Beer Week, managing editor Austin Counts takes a deep dive into what s happening with local breweries in this week s cover story. Counts taps into Rebuild the Guild, a new American IPA being crafted by multiple breweries (sometimes with their own twist) in support of the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild; examines the challenges facing the breweries as they have fewer customers and an aluminum shortage that limits how much they able to expand their canning operations; and introduces you to the new management at Borderlands Brewing Company. We ll have more on the local activities
Phoenix man breaks barriers with Black-owned brewery business
Tyler Smith said he hopes Kitsune Brewing Company will break down racial stigmas in the craft beer industry as the only Black-owned brewery in Arizona. Author: Vanessa Ramirez Updated: 7:20 AM MST February 8, 2021
PHOENIX Tyler Smith of Phoenix made history by establishing Arizona s only Black-owned brewery.
Smith said he was first introduced to the world of home brewing by a friend 14 years ago.
“He told me, he made this beer in his garage and I was like, ‘No way, you don t do that, you can t do that.’ So that next year, I went out and bought all the equipment and I just started home brewing for fun, Smith said.
HB 2773 Hopes to Legalize To-Go Cocktails for Bars and Restaurants
The Arizona legislature is back in session, and on Monday a bill was introduced that would allow bars and restaurants across Arizona to once again sell to-go cocktails. This is not to be confused with off-sale privileges i.e., packaged alcohol which bars with a Series 6 liquor license are currently allowed to conduct by law. Rather, we re talking about sealed drinks that bars mix and sell to customers. The bill, HB 2773, would give restaurants (which typically hold a Series 12 liquor license) an opportunity to apply for and purchase an additional permit to sell to-go cocktails. Arizona state House Representative Jeff Weninger introduced HB 2773; he also is a co-owner of Floridino’s Pizza & Pasta and Dilly’s Deli. The bill would also make it legal for third-party delivery services to transport the goods, allowing them to obtain a license from the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control.
