Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s looming deadline of May 12 to cancel the easement allowing Enbridge Line 5 to flow through the Straits of Mackinac has come and gone. Ottawa notably stepped up to intervene in the mess surrounding Line 5, submitting a court brief to save the pipeline and thousands and thousands of jobs in an energy sector that has already taken one too many hits.
Canada argues in its court brief that not only would the shutdown of Line 5 by the Michigan state government disrupt Canada’s energy security and economy, it would seriously damage bilateral relations between the two countries.
