#WSF2021 | Background
Globally, 2020 was the second hottest year on record, adding another grim milestone to a rapidly warming planet. In Europe, according to data released by the Copernicus Climate Change Service, 2020 was the warmest year on the continent. Ocean acidification, desertification, collapsing biodiversity, disappearing habitats, intensifying storms, droughts and heatwaves - the changing climate is already manifesting its impacts.
As we strive to limit temperature growth to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels, in 2016 & 2020, the global mean temperature was already 1.2°C higher than this baseline.
To tackle the climate crisis, we must re-think and restructure the global economy and society, harness all available assets and include science, technology and innovation in our decisions and policymaking.

The company intends to use the funds to establish operations, build up an experienced team over the next 12 months, and develop the Cardioid technology into a platform solution for compound screening.
Led by Michael Krebs, CEO, HeartBeat.bio is developing a high-throughput 3D screening platform for heart diseases using self-organizing human cardiac organoids (Cardioids). The Cardioid technology has been invented by the Mendjan lab at IMBA, a leading hub in organoid research.
This human organoid screening platform enables the automated, reproducible, and cost-effective large-scale generation and analysis of cardiac organoids, making it suitable for high-throughput compound screenings.
Globally 60% of all species have been lost since 1970 and yet each year we destroy more forests and dam more rivers. To call this a biodiversity crisis seems almost an understatement. This year a major United Nations meeting, the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in 2021 will be held in China, aimed at trying to map a path to stopping this suicidal trend.
This month Austrian Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler announced Austria had joined the so called High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People aimed at putting 30% of the earth’s surface under effective protection by 2030. Other countries in the coalition include Costa Rica, France and the United Kingdom.
