However, by the end of his life, he had become the American Deaf community s most powerful enemy, as he positioned himself at the forefront of the oralist movement. They oralist movement s aim was to teach the deaf to speak and extinguish the use of American Sign Language in the face of growing evidence that focusing on speaking orally often came at the additional expense of all other education, causing serious harm to brain development.
