Russian Reactions To The Agreement Between China And Iran – A Mix Of Gloating Over America s Comeuppance, Coupled With Concern Over Chinese Competition

On March 27, 2021, China and Iran signed a 25-year cooperation agreement valued at 400 billion USD and integrating Iran into the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative.[1] For Russia, the agreement was received on two levels. On one level, Russia, which has been on the receiving end of Western sanctions viewed the agreement as a blow to the sanctions policy and therefore as a positive. On a different level, the Sino-Iranian agreement, coupled with recent activity by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in the region that included visits to Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the UAE, Bahrain, and Oman raised the question of Chinese competition for Russia. Our kids got to hear about the story of a Jewish Holocaust survivor, rising from the ashes of the Holocaust, liberated by African American heroes, raising a child to go on and become the Secretary of State of the United States of America.

Dr. Torrey Taussig from the Harvard Kennedy School will present the final rescheduled lecture at 10:00am via Zoom on Friday, February 5, discussing “Discuss Stronger Together: Revitalizing the Transatlantic Relationship in the Biden Era”, in this winter’s DCA Academic Lecture.
Taussig is the Research Director for the Project on Europe and the Transatlantic Relationship and the American Secretaries of State Project at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. She is also a Nonresident Fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Center on the United States and Europe.
