California-based E&J Gallo Winery is tapping into the ready-to-drink trend with the purchase of Liqs, producer of cocktail shots, for an undisclosed sum.

Liqs, the latest addition to the E&J Gallo portfolio, was founded in 2013 to fill the ‘consumer need of a well-made shot for home consumption’.
The brand sells 20% ABV wine- and spirit-based cocktail shots positioned as premium products, in flavours such as Lemon Drop, Kamikaze, Lychee Grapefruit, Tequila Cinnamon Orange and Whiskey Fireshot.
Midwest Custom Bottling, which produces RumChata, was also included in the transaction, according to a news release.
“As a small independent producer, we never imagined the success of RumChata when we were just getting started back in 2009,” Mass said in a news release. “I know the RumChata brand will thrive under Gallo s guidance.”
Agave Loco is based in Vernon Hills. The company ranked No. 1 on Crain’s 2014 list of fastest-growing companies, with 2013 revenue of $52.1 million and a five-year annual growth rate of 611,724 percent. The company appeared on the list in the No. 2 spot in 2015 with revenue of $70 million and a five-year growth rate of 25,341 percent.

MODESTO, Calif. (April 6, 2021) – E. & J. Gallo Winery (Gallo) announced today that its Spirits Division has signed an agreement to acquire Agave Loco LLC, the owner of RumChata, a leading cream liqueur brand.
Inspired by the traditional milky rice drink from Mexico, founder and master blender Tom Maas began experimenting in his kitchen to create his version of a rum-based horchata. Using fresh dairy cream, rum and a proprietary sweet spice blend, RumChata was born in 2009. Since its introduction, RumChata has steadily grown within the cream liqueur category in both retail and on-premise.

The Rumchata brand is inspired by Mexican rice-based drink horchata
The deal, which is expected to close on 16 April, also includes Midwest Custom Bottling (MCB), which produces Rumchata at its facility in Wisconsin, US. MCB’s Tippy Cow rum cream and Holly Nog wine-based eggnog brand are also included in the agreement.
Founded by Tom Maas in 2009, Rumchata (13.75% ABV) is inspired by Mexican horchata, a traditional rice-based drink. Mass sought to create a rum-based horchata using fresh dairy cream, Caribbean rum and a sweet spice blend.
