Though a number of heritage structures and monuments still cry for attention, a significant work has been done to restore the past glory of the holy city. Steps taken during the last some years are now visible in form of Heritage Street, Qila Ahluwalia, Qila Gobindgarh, Jallianwala Bagh, Durgiana Temple plaza walk and Rambagh Deorhi, among others. The projects were carried out by the Centre and the state government along with the Amritsar Municipal Corporation. The city caters to thousands of tourists every day and these projects help in boosting tourism.
Restoration of historic gates
There are 12 historic gates around the walled city. Out of these only seven gates exist and the renovation was held under the National Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana. Public libraries and open discussion platforms were constructed under this project, but in the absence of any policy, infrastructure developed by spending crores is gathering dust.

With seven more Covid-19 related deaths reported in the district during the last 24 hours, the toll has increased to 802 on Friday.
The health authorities reported 412 fresh cases in the district. With this, the total count has increased to 25,924. Out of the new cases, 306 were suffering from influenza like illness (ILI) and 106 were contacts of positive cases.
The deceased have been identified as Dalbir Kaur (60) a resident of Kotla village, Geeta Rani (68) of Chowk Moni, Balbir Singh (50) of Tahli Sahib, Omprakash Nanda (80) of a resident of Celebration Enclave, Aneeta Panesar (57) of Bhilowal village, Harjinder Kaur (68) of Guru Arjan Dev Nagar, and Raj Kumar (58), a resident of Dam Ganj.

A medical officer with the Amritsar Municipal Corporation has allegedly died by suicide apparently upset over the government s failure to release the dues owed to her late husband, a doctor who died in August while undergoing COVID-9 treatment himself.
Dr Sonia Sharma, who died on Monday, is survived by a son and daughter.
Sources close to the family told NDTV that Dr Sharma was upset that repeated requests had failed to get the government to pay her the dues towards her husband, Dr Arun Sharma, a Senior Medical Officer at the Amritsar Civil Hospital. He had had died on August 30 after developing ICU psychosis while undergoing treatment for COVID-19.
