Amarillo resident to submit petition on city hall project funding

Amarillo resident Craig Gualtiere released a statement Tuesday, stating his intention to submit a formal signature petition to officials with the city of Amarillo surrounding members of the community’s objection to potential use of certificates of obligation with the City Hall project.  According to previous reports by the Amarillo Globe-News, this petition comes after the city of Amarillo’s numerous discussions, and decisions, regarding the potential future of City Hall. City officials have previously expressed interest and intent to relocate city offices as the current City Hall is in disrepair and continues to deteriorate. Options moving forward include making minor fixes to the current facility, making long-term repairs to the current facility or moving to another location.

Amarillo medical professionals honored for roles in COVID-19 pandemic

One year ago Tuesday, Rodney Gonzalez had his first day in his role as the director of the Amarillo VA Healthcare System. At that time, the Texas Panhandle, along with the state, the nation and the world as a whole, did not know the full impact the COVID-19 pandemic was going to bring.  But just one year later, Gonzalez was one of five doctors honored by the city of Amarillo for their work during the COVID-19 pandemic, giving city officials, along with community members, the chance to look back on the past year and the impact of COVID-19 on the region as a whole.

Mayor Nelson sworn in for another term at Amarillo City Council meeting

During Tuesday’s regular meeting of the city of Amarillo’s city council, Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson was officially sworn in for another term, coming after candidate Claudette Smith challenged the race through recount proceedings after the results of the May 1 election. According to previous reports by the Amarillo Globe-News, Nelson, along with Place One Council member Cole Stanley, Place Two Council member Freda Powell, Place Three Council member Eddy Sauer and Place Four Council member Howard Smith were all elected to their respective positions May 1.  However after the results came out, mayoral candidate Claudette Smith requested a recount for the mayor’s race. Because of the proceedings, it delayed the official canvassing and the swearing in of Nelson for this term as Mayor, something Nelson spoke about during the council meeting.
