For her art class during her junior year at Flagler-Palm Coast High School, photographer Briana Aguiar decided to concentrate on portraits.
Never mind that the 16-year-old Bunnell resident, who began to seriously pursue photography only during her freshman year, had won first place in the architecture category of the Photographic Society of America’s 2020 Youth Show – an international competition.
Never mind that pandemic-enforced social distancing made photographing people more challenging than capturing a unicorn.

St. Brigid s Day
In Ireland, the first of February marks the beginning of Spring and the celebration of Lá Fhéile Bríde, St Brigid’s Day. Like many of Ireland’s other Christian feast days, Brigid predates Christianity – her roots lie in the Celtic festival of Imbolc, the feast of the goddess Brigid, celebrated at least five millennia ago. In old Irish, Imbolc means in the belly , a reference to lambing and the renewal Spring promises.
Brigid was a triple goddess – of healing, fire, and of poetry – and the saint who took her name, born in 450 AD, carried some of those same associations. The patron saint of poets and midwives, by legend, she maintained a sacred fire by the monastery she founded in Kildare. Alongside St Patrick and St Columcille, she is also one of Ireland’s three patron saints.
Austin 360
Austin s classical radio station KMFA 89.5FM has moved into a new East Austin space with a live performance studio that can host up to 135 people, but due to the ongoing pandemic, station managers have opted to host a virtual grand opening celebration called Live from the Draylen Mason on Jan. 29-31.
The Draylen Mason Music Studio, which is the centerpiece of the station s new space, is named after a promising young bassist who died tragically when a package bomb exploded at his house in March 2018. Mason was 17 at the time and many KMFA staffers knew him through his participation in Austin Youth Orchestra and the youth music program Austin Soundwaves. At the time of his death, Mason had been accepted to several prestigious music schools including The University of Texas Butler School and the competitive conservatory program at Oberlin.
