Fund the Amador: A bridge to cultures, generations

Fund the Amador: A bridge to cultures, generations Jo Reprecht View Comments On June 14 the Las Cruces City Council will hold a work session on the Amador Project, the ongoing renovation of the historic Amador Hotel for adaptive re-use. Dating from the 1880’s and located at 180 W. Amador Ave. (northeast corner of Amador and Water Street), this city-owned property is in the Downtown Tax Increment Development District making infrastructure enhancements to the two-story adobe building eligible for TIDD funding. TIDD monies don’t come from the city’s general fund; TIDD dollars are generated by taxing district businesses and can only be used for district projects. The city’s Economic Development Department recently identified improvements to the Amador’s electrical, plumbing, communication, and security systems for possible TIDD funding of up to $1.5 million in 2022.

Encourage authorization of $1.5M in Amador Hotel funding

Encourage authorization of $1.5M in Amador Hotel funding Jean Fulton View Comments Next month, the Las Cruces City Council will vote whether to fund the ongoing preservation of the Amador Hotel, 180 W. Amador Ave., adjacent to the visitor’s center at the southern gateway to the revitalized downtown. Local supporters of the adaptive re-use project should contact their city representatives now. Current plans, approved by the State Historic Preservation Division in Santa Fe, envision the local landmark as a vibrant cultural hub, museum, events center, business incubator including wi-fi access, and leased offices. It will once again be a cherished social destination for locals and tourists alike.

Tender loving care applied to buildings and culture landscape

Tender loving care applied to buildings and culture landscape Harold Morgan “Built environment” is a snooty term for buildings and other things around us. Buildings typically get taken for granted because they are there all the time; they fade into the background of our mental landscape. That happens everywhere, I suppose. The difference, though, is that New Mexico’s buildings look different. Some argue that traditional New Mexico’s styles may be the only design approaches native to North America. Maybe. But these styles the buildings around us affect us, just as the skyscrapers of New York City affect New Yorkers.
