Both McMillan’s parents were Aboriginal, but McMillan did not know that as a child. “At high school I saw an aboriginal line drawing of a man that looked like dad with his skinny legs, and head shape,’’ McMillan said.

Her father said he had felt forced to hide his heritage. A few years later her mother also learnt she had Aboriginal blood. After leaving secondary school McMillan began looking into her family background.
