The Youth Author Award went to 17-year-old Rama Altaleb for her short story Lost Childhood. Authors between the ages of 13 and 17 were invited to submit a short story under 3,000 words. Altaleb  will receive $5,000 and a mentorship lunch with editors of The Walrus. Altaleb is a 17-year-old Syrian immigrant living in Nanaimo, B.C. After arriving in Canada in 2018 from the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, Rama began to reflect on her own lost childhood. It sparked her interest in reading and writing about children in crises. Winning this award has proven to me that I am on the right track and has assured me that I ll achieve my dream of writing my memoir in the future, said Altaleb in a statement.

Blue Metropolis International Literary Festival runs April 24 to May 2

Starting April 24 and running until May 2, the spring programming of the 23rd Blue Metropolis International Literary Festival will be in full swing, along with the TD-Blue Metropolis Children’s Festival. Online and later outdoors, more than 50 eclectic events with 200 artists will delight eyes and minds around the theme, The Challenges of Our Times. Free multilingual events in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic take the form of captivating panels, debates and interviews. Events are added daily and will remain online. “This very special edition of the festival is presented during a pandemic which isn’t letting up, but which has not got the better of our great energy and our endless will,” said William St-Hilaire, Blue Metropolis Executive and Artistic Director.
