Cllr Paddy Bracken from Mountmellick was shocked to hear of the closure. “It’s an awful blow to the town, it’s unbelievable. It’s a business decision but it is very unfortunate for Mountmellick, it will take people out of town again. “This is where Shaws started and they have been a great employer through the years. I remember when they did menswear, shoes, dressmaking, it was a top shop and it is a fine modern premises,” he said.

Shaws Department Stores have confirmed local rumours that it is closing its first ever store which is in Mountmellick. Shaws Managing Director Andrew Shaw has confirmed the news to the Leinster Express this Monday May 3. “Shaws department Stores can confirm that our store in Mountmellick will close permanently following the current lockdown,” Andrew Shaw said. He said that the workers will be offered jobs in the Portlaoise shop. “It’s our intention that there will be no job losses. We plan to relocate our business to Shaws Portlaoise.

Upper Arlington Roundup: Veteran Golden Bears gymnasts, new coach seek another league title ThisWeek group Entering her first season as Upper Arlington gymnastics coach, Anna Tzagournis wants nothing more than for the Golden Bears to experience the success Tzagournis enjoyed in high school.  A member of UA’s state-qualifying teams in 2014 and 2015 and an individual qualifier on floor exercise as a junior, Tzagournis has replaced Brittany Maynard, who resigned after two seasons.   Tzagournis, who graduated from Tennessee last spring, jumped at the chance to lead the program, in which her younger sister, Mia, is a senior.  “I just wanted to step up for her and the other seniors so they could have a good year,” coach Tzagournis said. “I’m familiar with this program because I competed here for three years (2013-16).
