Edwin Apps, who has died aged 89, was an actor whose main claim to fame was as one half of the writing partnership – with his wife and fellow actor Pauline Devaney – behind All Gas and Gaiters (1966-1972), the BBC sitcom set in a cathedral close and featuring a laughably inept quartet of Anglican clerics.
