“This is not something that’s a phase for us, but the work continues,” Ford said.
Zeta Sigma Lambda hosts the annual parade in San Diego, which features floats, high school bands, drill teams, youth organizations and churches. While the parade didn’t happen this year, Ford said as he looked back on a challenging year that King’s message of peace and quality remains timely, from the pandemic to civil unrest to, most recently, the Capitol being stormed by people lined to white supremacist groups.
“When I was a young man, I said a prayer: Lord, let me see a day where my sons, daughters, granddaughters, my kids would not see what I saw when I was in my 20s and 30s, Ford said, but here we are now, in 2021, so I guess that prayer is going to have to extend. Hopefully my great-grandkids will see a day where none of this stuff exists…. We’re not post-racial just yet. There’s still a lot of work to be done. A lot of progress has been made, but still there� ....

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The 33rd annual All Peoples Celebration, honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., will take place Monday as a virtual event and will feature keynote speaker Rev. Dr. Yvette Flunder, founder and pastor of the City Of Refuge, United Church of Christ in Oakland.
The event is organized by Alliance San Diego, a community empowerment organization with the mission to build coalitions to promote justice and social change. The virtual event features Flunder as well as musical performances from the Kumeyaay Bird Singers, The Bengsons and poetry by Emmy-award winning poet, Boris BLUZ Rogers. ....

Opinion: Martin Luther King Jr. Day: San Diegans reflect on his legacy amid racial justice efforts in 2021

Let me first give you the definition of racism.
Racism is prejudice, discrimination or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.
Why did I give you that definition, you may ask? To have a conversation about race in America and America’s progress when it comes to race, we must have a clear understanding of the racism that is very fluent and prevalent in America. When we look at America’s history, the progress we see when it comes down to race since the last Civil Rights Movement is slim to none. Let’s talk about why. We can take moments from 2020 and even the first week of 2021 and compare those to the same actions that were taking place in the 1950s. The reasons for both historic moments are pretty similar, so if America has changed so much in a “positive” way, why are we marching for such similar reasons 70 years late ....
