Over the years, GeekWire has highlighted so many of the tireless folks who are nurturing the next generation of geeks. And this year we’re excited to announce a new award to recognize a select group of the Pacific Northwest’s top teachers.
This inaugural cohort is an impressive collection of educators who are inspiring young minds to achieve more in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math. They come from universities, public schools and nonprofits, and are working with kids from elementary school into college and supporting fellow teachers as well.

The United States is the only industrialized country without a national paid maternity leave policy, and one of six OECD countries without paid leave for fathers. That leaves U.S. firms to decide whether to provide paid leave to their employees who need time to care for themselves, new children, or loved ones. Just 21% of the civilian workforce, typically white collar workers at larger firms, have access to employer-provided paid leave.
Yet some recruiters and executives at small firms, especially tech start-ups, say that providing paid leave to employees or living in a state with a public paid leave program is increasingly making the difference in recruiting and retaining top talent, especially as the Covid-19 pandemic strains families to the breaking point. “I’ve had people turn me down because of the paid leave,” said Patricia Sias, head of HR at a small STEM firm that does not offer paid family leave. Pre-pandemic, home offices were often that neglected room in people’s homes. But now things are different. After the initial lockdown in 2020, 46.6% of UK workers did some work at home with 86% of those doing so because of the pandemic.
Semi-permanent workspaces
Since then, many have found that over time, those semi-permanent workspaces have become slightly more permanent – with official hybrid working coming into effect for an assortment of businesses and their teams. The adoption of hybrid working can in fact be seen as one of the few positives to come from the pandemic, with less travel, more freedom and higher productivity top of the benefits list for businesses and their employees.
