Komets begin build of roster for Cup defense
The Komets’ defense of their Kelly Cup Championship began in earnest Monday as they started putting together their roster for the coming season. The team re-signed forwards Anthony Petruzzelli, Zach Pochiro and Oliver Cooper, and defenseman Blake Siebenaler, while adding rookie defenseman D.J King.
“With these signings, the Komets officially begin the journey to defend the Kelly Cup,” general manager David Franke said. “We all know how much fun we had winning the Cup and we want to keep it. Anthony Petruzzelli, Blake Siebenaler, Zach Pochiro and Oliver Cooper were all instrumental in our run to the cup last season. Newcomer D.J. King is a promising defenseman to the Komets.”

Shawn Szydlowski has skated eight seasons with the Komets and he, at last, has solidified his résumé with a championship. If there was any doubt before, it now seems apparent his jersey will someday be lifted to the rafters at Memorial Coliseum. And he’ll likely be the last one to receive that honor for a long while.
But that doesn’t mean he’s done playing, not based on how he performed in the playoffs or what he said shortly after hoisting the Kelly Cup on Friday night at Memorial Coliseum.

Komets cap wildest of seasons with Kelly Cup

The season that almost never happened ended in the best possible way – with the Komets winning the Kelly Cup.
They cemented the championship with a 2-1 victory Friday night over the South Carolina Stingrays in front of a sellout crowd of 10,477 at Memorial Coliseum, keyed by Playoff MVP Stephen Harper’s two goals and Dylan Ferguson’s 26 saves.
“This is the best team I’ve ever played on. It’s the best night of my life, it really is,” said Shawn Szydlowski, the Komets’ longest tenured player with eight seasons donning the fireball. This city, with the way they support the team, it’s an NHL city and an NHL arena. The organization has been nothing but good to me. The fan base, the crowd, I can’t say enough about it.”
