AMSTERDAM What might be a quick trip to the grocery store to pick up necessities for some people can be an all-day task for families in the city who lack access to public transportation, according to John Sumpter, director of youth outreach at Creative Connections Clubhouse.
“I think it is very important to bring the city bus back to Amsterdam. We have a lot of families out here that need it,” Sumpter said.
Sumpter joined over a dozen community members and local officials outside of Creative Connections on East Main Street on Wednesday imploring state and federal officials to approve plans that would extend CDTA services to the city and Montgomery County.

The Greater Amsterdam School District Hall of Fame has announced its class of 2021, which will be inducted on Oct. 1 in a ceremony at the Perthshire banquet facility on Route 30.
This year’s induction class consists of Harrison Wilson Jr., William Marks, Louis Rosemarino, Bob Cudmore and Stephanie Boice Podolic in the Academic wing, along with Giuseppi Lanzi, Mike Angelotti, Bob Noto, John “Jack” Tracy and John Los in the Athletic wing. This year’s Legacy Team honoree is Amsterdam’s 1970 football team.
Wilson, a member of Amsterdam’s class of 1943, spent a half-century in the academic world, including a 22-year stint as the president of Norfolk State University from 1975 to 1997. Also a star four-sport athlete when in college at Kentucky State, Wilson who died in 2019 is the grandfather of Super Bowl-winning Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.

The countdown clocks for high school seniors are finally nearing their end, and school districts are finalizing graduation plans with many looking to offer in-person ceremonies.
Districts have embraced far more in-person events this spring compared to last year after state rules opened the door to more activities, and some large ceremonies are scheduled at the Times Union Center and Saratoga Performing Arts Center.
Some districts will mandate guests to the graduation ceremonies show proof of vaccination, a recent negative test for COVID-19 or evidence they previously recovered from the virus, following those state guidelines.

JOHNSTOWN The Greater Johnstown School District Board of Education approved items related to the Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery Board of Cooperative Educations Services at its special meeting Wednesday night at the Knox Building.
The board voted to approve the $3,747,908 BOCES administrative budget for the 2021-22 school year. The resolution stated that BOCES was also allowed to raise assessments to component school districts, non-component school districts, other BOCES, and other sources as deemed appropriate for the next school year.
Component districts must separately approve such BOCES budgets on an annual basis.
In other BOCES-related action, the Johnstown board approved three open seats for three-year terms on the HFM BOCES Board of Education. Approved for appointment were: Carmen Caraco of the Mayfield Central School District; Rebecca Cozzocrea of the Greater Amsterdam School District; and Matt Sullivan of the Fonda-Fultonville Central School District

CAPITAL REGION – Graduation plans for high schools across the Capital Region are starting to take shape now that school district leaders have specific state guidelines to follow.
The plans will vary widely across districts, with smaller districts finding it easier to stay within protocols, but it’s possible mores students get the feel of a traditional graduation this June than they did last year.
Niskayuna district officials this week outlined plans to host a June 23 graduation ceremony at SUNY Schenectady’s sprawling parking lot, with a ceremony agenda similar to how Niskayuna ceremonies have looked in the past. (Last year, the school held a drive-up ceremony, where students waited patiently for their opportunity to jump out of their car and cross the stage for their diploma.)
