The Santa Maria Police Department is working to strengthen its mental health response and services.
Since January, according to the Santa Maria Police Department, approximately 400 calls have been identified as mental health-related.
Crisis Intervention Officer Max Shaffer has been the only officer fully dedicated to mental health response and services. If it s someone I know that I have dealt with a bunch that I feel comfortable with, I am fine going out by myself. If it s an unknown or a new problem that we don t know about, I do go out with a patrol officer just in case,â Shaffer said.
Salina Central celebrates graduates in weekend ceremony
Salina High School Central had its commencement at 5 p.m. Sunday at Tony s Pizza Event s Center.
Salina Central s graduation featured addresses from two alumni, former Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Lawton Nuss and astronaut Steven Hawley.
Hawley, who spent over 30 days total in space, recalled his own graduation ceremony, and the keynote given by Senator Bob Dole.
Thanks to archives, Hawley was able to find the transcript of Dole s 1969 speech. Fifty-two years later, Hawley said one part stood out as he spoke to a new class of Central graduates. In a few more years, on a day like today, one of you may stand before this podium addressing another graduating class, Dole said in 1969. Whichever one of you that speaker is will have gained, hopefully, something more than wrinkles and a few gray hairs over the years, and will have something more to pass along to the graduating class.
