Sherry Rehman says ‘they’ want to run Pakistan through ordinances

ISLAMABAD: PPP parliamentary leader in Senate Senator Sherry Rehman has said that Higher Education Commission Ordinance is not being laid in the Senate nor is it becoming a bill.
“What is the purpose of this parliament if they want to run the country through ordinances,” she questioned. “This is extremely worrying. Our rights and responsibilities are being compromised. The President’s House has become an ordinance factory,” she said.
Moving on to another worrying development, the government has now come up with the Pakistan Media Development Authority (PMDA) Ordinance 2021, which will now be used as a tool for institutionalizing censorship and curbing media freedom,” she said.
Farooq Bazai nominated as new HEC chairman

KARACHI: The government has nominated Engineer Ahmed Farooq Bazai as the new chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC). Presently, he has been serving as vice-chancellor Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences, and as a member Higher Education Commission.
However, the post of chairman will remain vacant as per the orders of the Sindh High Court. According to the notification, issued by the Federal Ministry of Education and Professional Training, Engineer Bazai has been nominated to act as chairperson in terms of Section 8(3) of the Higher Education Commission Ordinance, 2002.
President approves ordinance ending HEC autonomy

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – President Arif Alvi has approved Higher Education Commission Amendment Ordinance 2021, formally ending the autonomy of the commission.
According to details, now all decisions of Higher Education Commission (HEC) will be subject to approval of Ministry of Education. Meanwhile, appointment of the HEC chairperson will be for two years and the members of HEC will be appointed for four years.
Earlier on March 27, government removed Chairman HEC Dr. Tariq Banuri before the expiry of his term.
