Municipal spokesperson Sipho Mkhize says the number of burials deemed illegal has been rising.
He says during the hard lockdown, they received multiple complaints from locals of families burying loved ones at home instead of designated graveyards.
He says this could result in a hefty fine or 10 years imprisonment. The reasons why such orders are made is that the toxins from dead bodies infiltrate the soil and has potential to contaminate underground water resources which could be used for drinking purposes. It also threatens the health of the local residents and animals in that area.
