Symmons Plains was another circuit that was sorely missed in the Covid-19 affected schedule for the 2020 Supercars championship and after a year on the sidelines, the Tasmania SuperSprint put on a spectacle.
Delayed by a week also, due to border closures in response to the most recent breakout of Covid-19 in Queensland, seeing the Supercars grid tackle the 2.4km, shortest circuit on the calendar was a sight for sore eyes.
From breaking a long-standing record for wins, to a confusing qualifying format and all the other fix-ins – here are the talking points from the Tasmania SuperSprint.
I m not sure how many wins I can establish this year but I can guarantee you I treat every one like it s the last. The result ends Van Gisbergen s seven-race winning streak which included a perfect six-from-six at the start of 2021 campaign. Having started from the third row of the grid, the 31-year-old New Zealander was happy with the outcome. Got to keep it rolling, Van Gisbergen said after Red Bull s 10th one-two finish in their history at Symmons Plains. The next few tracks are tough ones for us so score points while we can. Ford s Will Davison came home a distant third ahead of pole-sitter Cam Waters, who was unable to hold off his rivals in the final half of the 44-lap race as his Monster Energy Mustang struggled to bring its qualifying speed to race.
Sensational six: SVG dominates Tassie opener Repco Supercars Championship By James Pavey
Shane van Gisbergen has claimed a record-equalling sixth straight win in 2021 in an assured performance at Symmons Plains.
Van Gisbergen’s bid for victory came after he managed to recover from a poor start to regain the lead from Cameron Waters early on.
Waters led the early stanza of the race, only to be overtaken at Turn 6 by the championship leader.
The Tickford Racing driver battled to sixth, with Jamie Whincup making it a Red Bull Ampol Racing one-two.
The early laps suggested van Gisbergen’s winning run would be halted, with Waters forcing his way into an early lead.

The Supercars championship was welcomed back to Bathurst this weekend for the beginning of a new season, making for back-to-back visits to the Mountain after the series ended 2020 at the epic Mount Panorama circuit.
For the first time since 1993 sprint racing was top billing at Bathurst with a pair of 250-kilometre single-driver races to raise the curtain on the 2021 championship season.
Bold new colours and fresh team line-ups always give a good thrill at the start of a new season, but it was the on-track action that produces the real talking points.
